About Balado

Farming | Festivals | Flying

As stories go, Balado Airfield has a fairly extraordinary tale to tell.
Owned and operated within the family for over 100 years; this land has a long history of aviation and so much more.

In 1942, having been requisitioned by the Air Ministry to support Britain’s war efforts, RAF Balado Bridge opened as a training facility for Spitfire and Hurricane pilots during WW2. After the war ended, the site was returned to its original owners and its connection to all things flying continued. From gliding and hot air ballooning to paragliding and microlights – this beautiful location continues to draw pilots from far and wide.

As well as flying, Balado Airfield has been home to an array of events and activities, such as off road driving, hovercraft, land yachting, paint balling, motorcycle shows, steam rallies, dog shows and agricultural events.

However, it wasn’t until 1997 that Balado Airfield truly took the international stage, becoming home to T in the Park music festival. Balado hosted audiences of up to 85,000 people enjoying performances from the likes of The Who, Blur, The Killers, Muse, Greenday, Beyonce, REM and Artic Monkeys. After 18 incredible years, and with countless memories, In 2014 we bid farewell to T in the Park ready to start a new chapter in Balado’s history.

Since then, a huge development plan has been underway to create a first-class flying facility for pilots, students and enthusiasts for decades to come. See you in the skies!
